Western Forsyth Post 522 tops Kernersville Post 36 in back-and-forth affair, 9-6

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the end of May, Western Forsyth Post 522 outlasted Kernersville Post 36 after six lead changes, squeaking out a 9-6 win at West Forsyth Senior High School. This was not only Western Forsyth Post 522's home opener, but also their season opener. Members from American Legion Post 522 started the day's events with a memorable display of our country's flag and colors along with a random riffle salute.
Western Forsyth Post 522 took the lead in the sixth inning and held on for the victory. Western Forsyth Post 522 scored on an RBI double by Hunter McLaughlin off Eric Davis, scoring Kyle Humphrey. Kyle Willard lead Western Forsyth Post 522 with a 3-5 appearance at the plate and two runs scored. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the fourth and eighth innings.
Kenneth Pope got the win for Western Forsyth Post 522. He allowed one run over four innings. He struck out two, walked one and surrendered two hits.
Western Forsyth Post 522 jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Willard doubled to ignite Western Forsyth Post 522's offense. An error then moved Willard from second to third.
Western Forsyth Post 522 scored one run in each of the fifth, sixth and eighth. In the fifth, Western Forsyth Post 522 scored on a passed ball, bringing home Robert Deluca.
Kernersville Post 36 tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Carlyle Beatty that scored Chris Kane.
Western Forsyth Post 522 piled on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Zach Winkler kicked things off with a single, plating Andrew Hawkins. That was followed up by a passed ball that scored Winkler.
After pushing across one run in the top of the ninth, Kernersville Post 36 faced just a 9-6 deficit. A solo home run by Tyler Surface gave Kernersville Post 36 life.
